Fixed Income and Interest Rates in 2025

In 2025, interest rates remain an important consideration for savers and investors comparing cash, deposits and fixed-income investments. Their relative appeal can change with market conditions, but the comparison is not as simple as choosing the highest stated rate.

Income has a source and a structure

A stated rate should always be considered alongside who is paying it, how long money is committed, whether capital can be accessed early and what happens at maturity. A bank deposit and a fixed-rate bond may both quote an interest rate, but they are different arrangements with different protections and risks.

Cash and deposits may offer a different level of income from fixed-income investments, while serving different purposes. Inflation, tax, reinvestment risk and the role of each holding within a wider plan should all be considered alongside the stated return.

Terms matter as much as headline rates

Committing all available capital to one maturity date can create an access problem. Spreading maturities may help align future cash needs, while retaining an appropriate liquid reserve can reduce the pressure to sell an investment at an unsuitable time.

A defined payment is not the same as certainty

A fixed coupon or stated deposit rate can make expected income easier to understand, but the strength of the institution or issuer, the product terms and the investor’s ability to hold for the intended period remain important. In 2025, reading beyond the rate remains essential to understanding the complete arrangement.
